1 in 9 above 60 years old has dementia in Malaysia

  • The latest National Health and Morbidity Survey 2018 of Malaysia showed that the prevalence of dementia was 8.5% amongst those aged 60 years and above. The prevalence of dementia was higher in those living in rural areas, females, those with no formal education, and lower-income levels.

  • Dementia is not a part of normal aging.

  • It is a medical condition that causes brain cells to die at a faster rate than normal. The resulting progressive cognitive decline leads to increasing difficulties in coping with everyday activities. A common symptom is poor short-term memory. On average, a person with dementia lives four to eight years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years.
